Dry Eye Tips for the Winter

Dry eye syndrome, also known as ocular surface disease (OSD), is a prevalent health condition that affects millions every year. Treatment for Dry Eye Syndrome

The artificial tears may work by easing the dry, itchy feeling in your eye through increased tear production. However, if you wear standard contact lenses, you may need to remove them before using the lubricating eye drops. Punctal plugs are inserted in your tear ducts to slow your eyes from drying if needed. If the temporary plugs work, we will insert permanent plugs. We use the LipiFlow treatment usually for severe and chronic dry eyes.


Treating Dry Eyes During Winter

When the weather gets colder, our office sees a larger influx of patients dealing with dry eye syndrome. This is because the weather has a significant effect on our eye condition. To avoid developing dry eye syndrome during the winter, we recommend lowering the temperature in your house. Dramatic shifts in temperature can negatively affect our eyes. Wear sunglasses outside. Sunlight bouncing off the white snow can make it difficult to see during the winter. Make sure to stay hydrated. Use a warm washcloth to generate moisture in your eyes when needed. Eye drops can help relieve dry eye syndrome, but it is essential not to overuse them.
