Cataracts

Understanding Cataracts

Cataracts are a common eye-related issue that mainly affects older people but can still affect people of all ages. The condition involves the clouding of the eye's lens, which is vital for clear sight. At Dunedin Eye Care in Dunedin, our optometrist can detect cataracts during your comprehensive eye exam and advise you about treatment that will help you maintain your sight.

What Are Cataracts?

Cataracts affect the crystalline lens, which is located under the iris and pupil. This lens focuses light onto the retina at the back of the eye, where it is then translated into an image. If the lens becomes clouded, the image is distorted and hazy.  You may have trouble with night vision or have sensitivity to light when suffering from cataracts. You may also experience double vision.  Colors may seem yellowed, and you notice you need more light for reading and other activities.

Causes of Cataracts

Aging is one of the primary causes of cataracts. However, some babies are born with cataracts that must be removed to allow for normal vision. Long-term diabetes and extended use of steroid medications can also lead to cataracts. Exposure to radiation can cause cataracts as well.

Testing for Cataracts During an Eye Exam

During your regular eye exams, our optometrist will carefully examine your eyes and determine your visual acuity. If we suspect you have cataracts, our doctor will dilate your eyes for a better view of the internal structures. In this way, our eye doctor can determine the extent of the cataract development and what measures should be taken.

Effective Cataract Treatment Is Available

Cataracts develop over several years. In the early stages, you may not notice significant changes in your ability to see. However, as the cataracts progress, you may have more difficulty with your vision. Our eye doctor can change your eye prescription to help you see more clearly. When cataracts become a serious impairment, our doctor will recommend surgery to remove the eye's damaged lens and replace it with an artificial lens. These surgeries are help individuals regain clear vision.
